Anniyan is a 2005 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film, starring Kamal Haasan in three distinct roles. The film is told in the third person through the protagonist's point of view, following his investigations on three different people referred to by commentators as "Mad Max", "Schizo" and "The Undertaker". Shortly after its release, it was ranked by CNN-IBN as one of the top ten best films in India. The film has garnered the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and was screened at various international film festivals including Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The film has been dubbed into Hindi and Telugu and was released in theaters in the United States on July 25, 2006. The film met with critical acclaim upon release with praise directed to Kamal Haasan's acting, direction, screenplay and photography. A sequel to the film was announced in August 2012 after being put on hold during production of his next project Vaaranam Aayiram. The cast of "Anniyan" was finalised on 9 March 2005, at a press conference where Kamal Haasan said he would play three different characters. The cast included newcomers Kalai Selvan as Mad Men, Bindu Madhavi as The Undertaker and newcomer Sanusha Nadeer as Schizo. Kamal Haasan's daughters Akshara and Shruti Haasan were also part of the cast. Akshara played Kamal's on-screen daughter, while Shruti played "a girl who has no legs". Pooja Kumar was initially cast as Mad Men but opted out due to her conflicting schedule. To prepare for his role, Kamal met with an accident survivor, who had undergone facial reconstruction surgery. Kalai Selvan learnt sign language for his role as Schizo, which required him to express himself without speech. Akshara used a wheelchair as she had lost some time due to childbirth, and had to reacclimatise. Kamal was inspired by the 1976 film "Mad Max", and the 1979 film "Schindler's List", and wanted to make a film like "Jurassic Park". He also discussed the story with his father and the film's cinematographer Jayaraj. The script of "Anniyan" was written by Kamal Haasan, who based it on his experiences of growing up in Chennai. At the 2005 National Film Awards, Kamal won the category for best dialogue writer for his work on this film, which he attributed to his experience with actors and directors in Kollywood. A song titled "Anniyan" was composed by D. Imman, marking the first time that Imman has worked with Kamal Haasan. This song was written for the film by Kamal Haasan himself. The song was composed by T. V. Chandran, who also composed the background music for this film. Director Shankar stated that the relationship between two characters, one played by Kamal and one played by Jeeva, would remain unchanged throughout their journey in the film. He stated that Balaji subsequently modified this idea during editing of the film's final cut to suit his own taste, which he described as "a little different". cfa1e77820
